Although there’s been a revitalization plan in place for Kingston Rd. from Guildwood GO station to Highland Creek in Scarborough since 2003, it’s only been recently that work has begun. The municipal Official Plan and Zoning Bylaw Amendment envisions a more urban, pedestrian-friendly and transit-oriented corridor achieved by developing vacant or underutilized sites with midrise, multi-use developments that will address the “missing middle” in the city’s housing stock. . The result is a coordinated intensification from the Beaches through Scarborough and into Pickering. Highland Commons is one of the first opportunities to take advantage of the transformation of one of Canada’s oldest thoroughfares.

The internationalization of Ontario colleges is a strategic mandate from both the federal and provincial governments to address declining domestic enrollment, labour market shortages, and the evolving needs of 21st century post-secondary students. The growth in numbers of international students in Ontario colleges has been particularly rapid over the past five years. Canada is now the world’s third-leading destination of international students, with a staggering 642,000 foreign students. Ontario is by far the largest beneficiary of foreign students in Canada. In 2019, it hosted some 48 per cent of Canada’s international student population—nearly 307,000 people.
Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) research shows that international students choose Canada due to the country’s strong quality of education, as well as its reputation as a multicultural and tolerant society. Some 60 per cent of international students have also reported to CBIE that they are interested in becoming permanent residents of Canada after their studies.
Canada offers international students one of the world’s most competitive packages, allowing them to work while they study, then obtain a post-graduation work permit to gain Canadian work experience, and then offers them more than 80 economic class immigration streams to choose from. After completing their Canadian education, they are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) that enables them to stay in Canada and pursue full-time employment opportunities for up to three years. |

The Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit (DSBRT) line will bring 36 kilometers of bus rapid transit that would serve Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering and Scarborough. Higher capacity transit is needed to link communities, employment, schools and other major destinations along Highway 2 across the Toronto and Durham boundary. The DSBRT will allow for seamless connections with local transit networks, providing the residents of Scarborough more flexibility and choice to get where they need to go, faster and more reliably
Part of this plan is to bring more frequent and reliable transit service to Durham Region and the City of Toronto, through the Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit project. The proposed Bus Rapid Transit project builds on the existing PULSE service along Highway 2 in Durham Region and Ellesmere Road in the City of Toronto.
Besides better service, there will be improved connections to local and regional destinations: Scarborough Town Centre, Pickering Town Centre, Centenary Hospital, University of Toronto Scarborough Campus, Centennial College, Woburn Collegiate and Ontario Tech University. There will be improved active transportation facilities including wider sidewalks and cycling infrastructure to increase safety. There will also be improved public realm with streetscaping and tree plantings. |
